Capital Rodders was formed in 1967 by a group of enthusiasts from various parts of Wellington. They included names like Alan Hare, Ron and Ann Mears, Colin 'Shady' Lane and Robbie Eastham. This meeting was in the Belmont Hall in Lower Hutt, and from the early days the groups focus was on involving family, which made the annual campout a highlight in their calendar. With membership floating around the 20 mark, difficulties in obtaining a venue on a regular basis led to moves to Johnsonville, then with membership increasing, a big move was made in 1996 to obtain clubrooms. This was successful by forming a joint venture with the Wellington Power Boat Club, and led to the purchase of clubrooms overlooking the Porirua Harbour. Since 1989 Capital Rodders has successfully organised street drags with Western Bays Street Rods. We have also combined with other Wellington area clubs to run the highly successful 1989 Street Rod Nationals, 1995 National Hot Rod Show, and in 1996 managed the Street Rod Nationals our own, all with only 20 members at the time. Having a base to work from has benefited the club in many ways. Membership now stands at 52 and is growing all the time. A raft race has become one of our regular events and the annual club campout has been resurrected. The clubs focus now is on involving members in all aspects of the sport, and has proven to be a good recipe with Capital Rodders taking out the Best Represented Club award at many events, including the 2001 Street Rod Nationals. The club has a proud history and boasts of having foundation members Ron and Ann Mears, and Robbie Eastham, still actively involved in the club. Ron and Ann are both Life Members, along with Gavin Doughty who was given the honour at the 1996 Street Rod Nationals. Alan Eager was awarded Life Membership in 2005. The club meets at the clubrooms on Onepoto Road, Titahi Bay, on the last Tuesday of every month. Visitors are always welcome. |
